The Tyne Tour began in 1990, originally as the Mike Jones Rally. Dr Mike Jones was an iconic figure in the world of canoeing; he is credited with many first descents by kayak, including most famously that of Everest in 1976. He died in 1978 on the Bradlu River in Pakistan while trying to save a companion. Mike was a great supporter of recreational white water paddling at a time when the only means to access white water was through the competetive disciplines of slalom and river racing. The Mike Jones Rally started as a recreational canoe touring event that was held annually on the River Dee in North Wales. After ten years on the Dee, it was moved to the Tyne, where it has been supported by the local Riparian Owners. If anyone has photographs or other memorobilia of early Mike Jones Rallies/Tyne Tours, do please get in touch, by e-mailing info@tynetour.co.uk | |||||||||||||
